Marketo Landing Pages: Free-form or Guided

Marketo has two template options, Free-form or Guided. The differences and advantages can be boiled down to the following points.

Free-form Advantages:

  • Drag and drop editing/layout and customization

Free-form Disadvantages:

  • Mobile display is limited to one smaller version
  • Mobile version must be edited in addition to the desktop version
  • Freedom of layout often leads to layout/style degradation

This is the live example of the free-form style Marketo Landing Page. If you skinny up your browser window, you’ll see that the page does have some responsiveness, but just one size fits small.

Guided Advantages:

  • Graceful responsive layout to a variety of smaller displays
  • Responsive version is generated from the same content as the desktop version, no need to edit in two places

Guided Disadvantages:

  • Layout is set and rigid, difficult to customize. Content must fit into the template/layout.
  • Changes to layout require coding

This is the live example of the guided style Marketo Landing Page. If you skinny up your browser window, you’ll see that the page responds gradually as the browser window (or mobile display) gets smaller.
